Important details
White is used behind the page
The renderer paints a white background before JPEG encoding because JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent PDF artwork is therefore composited into an opaque image.
Quality and DPI have separate costs
High DPI increases dimensions and memory use; high quality keeps more JPEG detail and increases bytes. Test a representative page rather than maximizing both controls automatically.
